dumbledore

Since I just saw a Harry Potter movie, I was again thinking about J.K. Rowling "outing" Dumbledore. I have two thoughts on this, but I want to be clear that I don't care if Dumbledore is gay, straight, whatever.

First thought: Rowling revealing this now seems like a cop out. It's like she wouldn't have wanted to add one more reason to create controversy about the series, and making this revelation after the fact didn't jeopardize book sales. One could imagine her like, "Ooo, look how progressive I am -- Dumbledore is gay! Now. After the series is over."

Second thought: I could give her the benefit of the doubt and think maybe she always intended him to be gay and always intended to reveal it after the conclusion of the series so that everyone would fall in love with him, and then the point could be made that it doesn't matter if someone is gay or not.

  1. Two things:
    1. In response to your comment on my post, the camera I bought does not have a touch screen. The newest version does, which is really unfortunate because that sound super cool.

    2. I am also a little confused about Rowling's intentions with this whole gay Dumbledore thing. I still have about 200 pages of the last book left to read, but so far I do not understand why his sexual orientation matters. Maybe it will make more sense to me when I finish.

  2. I like to think that option 2 is correct.

  3. Personally I feel that I have no frame of reference. I never read the books and I'm ok with that and if we learned one thing here... you all should be ok with my life choice of not reading Harry Potter books too.

  4. Yeah? Well, just don't try to claim that you were "born that way"!
    *wink*
